Elizabeth Cooke, Lady Russell 1528–1609, self-styled 'Dowager Countess' was a highly educated, pioneering woman, a poet and a designer of funerary monuments. Infamously she was responsible for raising a petition against the building of Shakespeare's Blackfriars Theatre close to her home.

Mary Sidney, Lady Herbert 1561 - 1621. A poet and literary patron and was listed alongside her brother, Philip Sidney, Shakespeare and Edmund Spenser (The Faerie Queene) among the noticeable authors of the period.
