KING LEAR

is a tragedy.


The traitor Gloucester has his eyes gouged out in punishment for warning the king of his planned murder. Goneril’s husband is fatally wounded and dies. Goneril poisons her sister, Regan, who then kills herself. Gloucester, although reunited with his son Edgar, eventually dies of a broken heart. Edmund reverses his order to execute Cordleia in his dying breath. Lear is reunited and reconciled with Cordelia, but word comes too late to prevent her being hanged and Lear too dies of a broken heart.
